Short answer: if you want Quizlet’s study modes without the paywall, Knowt wins: Learn, practice tests, matching and spaced repetition are free with unlimited rounds, it imports your Quizlet sets in a couple of clicks, and its spaced repetition mode works in the mobile app too. Quizlet still wins on its huge library of shared sets, its classroom features and its polish, and the free flashcards are enough for many students. If you mostly study from your own PDFs and notes, neither app is the shortest path, and we cover that case at the end.

Most people comparing the two are Quizlet users who just hit a limit on Learn or practice tests. That’s a fair reason to look around, but it’s not the only thing that matters, so this guide compares them on what you’ll actually use every week. Prices and features were checked on the official sites and help pages in October 2026.

The pattern is clear: Knowt gives away the study modes and charges for heavy AI use; Quizlet gives away the flashcards and charges for the study modes.

Free Plans: Where the Real Difference Is

Knowt’s free plan is more generous for studying. Knowt says you can go through unlimited rounds of its free Learn mode, matching game, spaced repetition and practice tests. For a student who just wants to drill sets every day, that’s the whole product for free, with ads.

Quizlet’s free plan is generous for making and sharing cards, not for drilling them. Flashcards are free, and so is browsing the public library. Learn rounds and practice tests are limited, and even the cheaper Plus plan ($35.99 a year, billed annually) caps you at 20 Learn rounds and 3 practice tests a month. Removing the caps takes Plus Unlimited at $44.99 a year.

If Learn mode is the center of your routine, that difference alone decides it for most people. If you mainly flip flashcards and use shared sets, the Quizlet free plan may already be enough.

Study Modes Compared

Learn Mode

Both apps have an adaptive Learn mode that mixes question formats and brings back the terms you miss until you get them right. Quizlet’s is the original and the more polished, with question types that move from multiple choice to written answers as you improve. Knowt’s works the same way and is designed to feel familiar to Quizlet users. In daily use the experience is close; the main difference is that Knowt doesn’t count your rounds.

Practice Tests

Both turn a set into a practice test with automatic grading. Knowt’s are free and unlimited. Quizlet’s are capped unless you pay for Plus Unlimited. Practice tests are one of the most effective study tools there is (the testing effect is among the best-replicated findings in learning science), so caps here matter more than caps on games.

Spaced Repetition

This is where Knowt quietly pulls ahead. Knowt has a dedicated spaced repetition mode that sets a review schedule and tells you how much to study each day, and it’s free in the app and on the web.

Quizlet’s spaced repetition lives in Flashcards: you rate each card Repeat, Hard, Okay or Easy and it comes back from minutes to four or more days later. It works, but Quizlet’s help center says it’s currently available only on the website, so phone sessions don’t use it. We explain the details in does Quizlet have spaced repetition.

Neither app documents its algorithm or offers the tuning of Anki, so for months of review on thousands of cards, a dedicated tool is still the stronger choice. See the best spaced repetition apps for that.

Games

Quizlet’s Match and its classroom games (including Quizlet Live) are a real strength for teachers and study groups. Knowt has a matching game too, but if your class runs on Quizlet Live, that’s a reason to stay.

AI Features

Both apps now use AI to turn your material into study sets, but they lean in different directions.

Knowt is built around it. You can upload notes, PDFs, PowerPoints or a lecture recording and get notes, flashcards and practice questions back. The free plan lets you try these tools; Ultra ($149.99 a year or $24.99 a month) adds the full AI summarizers for PDFs, videos, images and slides, a lecture recording summarizer, an AI voice tutor, ad-free studying and AP, SAT and ACT prep.

Quizlet offers AI tools to build sets from your notes and to explain answers, with most of them on paid plans. Its center of gravity is still the set: you make one, or you find one somebody else made.

A warning that applies to both: AI-generated cards from a PDF are a starting point, not a finished deck. Skim every set, delete trivia, and fix questions that test wording instead of understanding. Our guide to AI flashcard generators explains how to check generated cards in a few minutes.

Price: Which Is Cheaper?

It depends on what you pay for:

  • You only want unlimited study modes: Knowt is free. Quizlet costs $44.99 a year for unlimited Learn and tests.
  • You want heavy AI use on your own files: Knowt Ultra at $149.99 a year is the most expensive option of the two. If you only need it for exam season, the $24.99 monthly plan for two or three months can cost less.
  • You want the library and polish, light use: Quizlet’s free plan or Plus at $35.99 a year.

Moving From Quizlet to Knowt

Switching takes minutes:

  1. Install Knowt’s Chrome extension and open the set on Quizlet (Knowt also imports from Kahoot, Wayground and YouTube).
  2. Import it with the extension: Knowt says it takes a couple of clicks.
  3. Check the imported set, especially images and formatting, then start with Learn or spaced repetition.

Moving the other way, or to Anki, Brainscape or RemNote, works through Quizlet’s text export, which is available only on the website and only for sets you created. Our list of Quizlet alternatives covers each destination.

Which One Should You Choose?

You want to turn a lecture recording into notes and questionsKnowt
You want an ad-free experience for the least moneyQuizlet Plus
You need to remember thousands of facts for monthsNeither: use a real scheduler like Anki or LongTerMemory

A Third Option: When Your Material Is Your Own

Both apps are at their best with term-and-definition sets. If you study from long PDFs, textbook chapters or lecture slides, the bottleneck isn’t the study mode, it’s turning 60 pages into good questions and then reviewing them at the right time for months. That’s the case LongTerMemory is built for: it reads your files, generates question-and-answer pairs (open questions or multiple choice), and schedules each one with spaced repetition on the web and in the iOS and Android apps. It doesn’t import Quizlet sets and has no shared library, so it isn’t a replacement if you study other people’s sets. More on turning files into cards in PDF to flashcards.

FAQ

Is Knowt better than Quizlet?

For free studying, yes: Knowt’s Learn, practice tests and spaced repetition are free and unlimited. Quizlet is better for its shared library, classroom games and polish.

Is Knowt really free?

The study modes are free with ads, including unlimited rounds of Learn, matching, spaced repetition and practice tests. The full AI tools, ad-free use and test prep are in Ultra ($149.99 a year or $24.99 a month).

Can I import my Quizlet sets into Knowt?

Yes. Knowt imports Quizlet sets with its Chrome extension in a couple of clicks, and you can study them for free.

Does Knowt have spaced repetition?

Yes, a dedicated spaced repetition mode that schedules your reviews, available for free on the web and in the app. Knowt doesn’t publish the algorithm details.

Which is better for medical or law school?

Neither is ideal for thousands of cards over years. Anki is the standard for medicine; if writing the cards is what eats your time, LongTerMemory generates them from your own lecture material and schedules the reviews.

The Bottom Line

Knowt is the better deal for most students today: it gives away the study modes that Quizlet charges for, and its spaced repetition works on your phone. Quizlet remains the better home for shared sets and classroom games. And if what you really need is to remember your own course material for months, skip the set-making altogether: try LongTerMemory free for 7 days, upload a chapter, and let it generate and schedule the questions for you.
